Approximately fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report early analysis show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism left him stunned and required to be solved rapidly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
