"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are not alone. Several celebrated admirers have publicly petitioned for the honor.

The evidence suggests something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the best bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos repeatedly show them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to make music."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the next part of the family."

Grammy Milestone

The band have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project emerged from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That developed confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic tales.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

But Haim will forever be their primary focus.

"We have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
